HAL’s – How High Can You Jump?

This week, as part of our continued Healthy Active Learning, our Kelly Sport Coach, Hunter, set up the high jump to help us apply what we’ve been learning about the biomechanics of jumping. We began by practicing our scissor kicks using skipping ropes, an essential technique in high jumping. The scissor kick helps generate height and maintain balance, which are critical for clearing the bar safely and effectively. Each of us took turns jumping over the ropes at varying heights, exploring which leg felt most natural as our take-off leg.

Once we were confident, we transitioned to practicing with the bar and mat, refining our technique to combine power, coordination, and control. Building on our practice, many of us felt quite nervous, especially as the bar was raised higher. However, the experience was both exciting and rewarding, as it gave us a chance to improve our technique and build confidence. With Athletics Day just around the corner, this practice has been invaluable. We now feel more prepared and ready to perform at our best, aiming to represent our school proudly and possibly make the Tamaki Cluster team.

Touch Tournament

This week, many Team Kererū learners participated in the touch tournament alongside other schools in our cluster. We feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to take part in such amazing events. It was a fantastic day where we showcased not only our sportsmanship and skills but also our school values of Fun, Integrity, Respect, and Excellence.

We were glad it did not rain and that many of our whanau were able to come and support us. Did you get to go to the tournament?  What was your favourite part of the day?

HAL’s – Ready, Set, Jump!

Glen Taylor School is preparing for its annual athletics day! To prepare, Room 4 and the rest of Team Kererū have been exploring the biomechanics behind running, jumping, and throwing. Our teachers believe that understanding the fundamental movements for each activity is essential for us to perform at our best.

Last week, we focused on running techniques. We learned that to run at our best, we need to pay attention to our stance, stride, and even how we move our arms.

This week, our focus shifted to jumping. Mrs. Dimond from Sport Auckland joined us and set up different stations where we practiced scissor jumps, two-footed jumps, and hurdles all while having loads of fun.

Next week, we’ll be working on our throwing techniques. Do you have any tips for mastering the discus and shot put?

What’s your favorite athletic event to participate in?

HAL’s – Lots of Sports Happening in Team Kererū

Last week the year 5 & 6 Team Kererū learners had their first game of Netball.  It was great to have so many of our whanaū come and support us.   We have been training over the last two weeks at 7:30 in the morning with coach Kodi.  Our training paid off and we won 8 – 2.

We also started training for the upcoming league tournament.  Coach Kevin and Shane came in and we had a game of touch.

These games are a great way for us to show our Glen Taylor School Values, F.I.R.E (Fun, Integrity, Respect & Excellence).  We are also learning sportsmanship, participation, and collaboration.

What sports are your classes playing?

Do you have any tips on the types of drills we can do for netball and league?  If so please share in the comments.
