Kia ora Whanaū.

On Thursday the 14th March Glen Taylor School had a powhiri.  First, we welcomed the Maruhiri (visitors) with a Karanga (welcome call).   The tangata whenua did a haka powhiri.  After the haka powhiri, we heard the whaikõrero.  Then we sang our school waiata.  Finally we we went back to class and had kai.

Ms Karl’s literacy group wanted to know…

  • have you been to a powhiri before?
  • How did you feel?

Some of us felt nervous and scared at first but then we felt proud and excited to have been a part of it.

Share your feelings about the powhiri in the comments below.  We look forward to reading about your experience.

  1. Kia ora Ms Karl and Room 4,
What an awesome blog post! I was immensely proud of all the tamariki who took part in the powhiri, and particularly our students who led the haka powhiri with mana!
I always feel overwhelmed when attending a powhiri; I really do feel the presence of something great at these events.
I wonder if Room 4 can name some of the key stages of the powhiri?
Look forward to checking that soon.

  2. Kia Ora Ms Karl and Room 4,
Some of us in Team Koru have been to a powhiri before and some of us went to our first one at school on Thursday. Aubrey felt nervous and proud also. Lachaln felt happy and nervous. Mckay felt excited. What was your favourite part about the powhiri?
    From Team Koru.

  3. Kia Ora Room 4,
This year was the first time I was able to attend a Powhiri at GTS. I was blown away by your welcoming. The haka gave me goosebumps and your waiata was ataahua! It has been wonderful to see the inclusion of Te Reo Maori at GTS. Keep up the great work. Ka Mau Te Wehi!
